Guiding reading ranges can be tricky. Here is a guide to some of the third grade Guided Reading ranges.

Author's Purpose
The author's purpose is the reason why the author has written the text for readers. It's easy as PIE!
Clues to Identifying Author's Purpose:
If the text is written to inform the reader, it will probably contain:

- Facts
- Charts or diagrams
- Photographs with informative captions
- It will NOT contain opinions or any of the author's feelings
If the text is written to entertain the reader, it will probably contain:
- Humor
- Silly Situations
- An interesting plot
- A happy or inspiring ending
If the text is written to persuade the reader, it will probably contain:
- Facts AND Opinions
- Words from a famous, knowledgable person or authority
- Words that show the author's feelings on the subject
